Transformers One Review

First of all I want to thank my brother for taking me to see this film because if it weren’t for him I wouldn't have been convinced this was a good Transformers film. Corey (my brother) kept telling my how great this film was and that this film is completely different from what they marketed as. Not only was he right, but damn I'm so glad myself and everyone else was wrong about this film. This film is a perfect example of, “don’t judge a book by it's cover”.

The previous live action adaptions of Transformers (except Bumblebee & maybe Rise Of The Beasts) have gotten literally everything wrong about the autobots/decepticons. From the constant focus on the human characters of the film to the bland boring writing fans were just tired if seeing the same things over and over again. But in the world of animation anything and everything is possible. There is no limitations at all from the story telling aspect to the action sequences, hell even the animation.

Do you want to know the best part about this film though: no humans! That's right! For the first time in a Transformers film there are absolutely no humans which is great because the bots are the selling point of these films.

Orion Pax (voiced by Chrid Hemsworth) and D16 (voiced by Brian Tyree Henry) are mine workers and idolize Sentinel Prime (voiced by Jon Hamm) who is considered a hero on Cybertron. Orion Pax and D-16 make their way to the surface with a few allies, B-127 (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key) and Elite-1 (voiced by Scarlett Johansson) to look for the coordinates of the distress call. After the four make their way to the surface and discover the truth about Sentinel Prime from Alpha Trion (one of the remaining Sentinel's), he intrust in them to stop Sentinel Prime and expose him for being a liar and backstabber.

While, I definitely saw the reveal coming what I liked about it is the decent into madness we see from D-16 after finding out someone he looked up to was a phony and a liar. Yes, this film does have some great humor in it but it does an excellent job at balancing that out with the overall tone of the film. There are a lot of dark moments in this film I was relatively surprised by. Seeing D-16 go off the deep end and him becoming the person he hates so much (Sentinel Prime) is scary at times. This film is way darker than people would assume it is, especially for a so called, “kids" film.

D-16's obsession with revenge only divides him and Pax. Everything about this film is spectacular. From the darker tone, the world building, the score, ensemble cast, Screenplay, soundtrack and the animation. If you didn't like the other Transformers films trust me when I say you will love this! It goes right back to being what Transformers is truly all about and that's all you can ask for.
