Wicked Review
Wicked is an adaption of the Broadway music and it stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda. I can only speak for myself but i’m not the biggest fan of Musicals. Seeing how this is one of the most popular Broadway plays and a lot of people loved it I decided to see it myself. I’m just happy that no one in my theater was singing because that would've been very irritating.
As a black man in the U.S. my POV on the themes of this film might be different than anyone who doesn't look like me. The story is an allegory for racial stereotypes, profiling and microaggressions. Elphaba represents the dark-skinned black woman and how they're misconceptions about dark-skinned woman bring labeled as, “aggressive”. Ariana Grande represents the white girl who antagonizes and puts everyone in the same group because she never grew up around people that didn't look like her.
Ariana Grande is absolutely annoying and hilarious in this film. She and Cynthia Erivo have great chemistry together and even though I didn't know any of the songs they were all bangers. After the film was over not only did I want more but I couldn't stop singing to myself. The ensemble cast, production design, costume design, soundtrack, score and Cynthia and Ariana Grande's chemistry is all great. So glad I decided to be open minded and watch this because it has become one of my favorites of 2024.
