5 Great Films That Tanked At The Box Office
5. Transformers One (2024)
Let's start off with a most recent film of this year from a very popular franchise: Transformers. This film was marketed very poorly and because of that it suffered. From the initial trailer fans were thinking that this would just be a cash crab for parents to take their kids to see. However, like the saying goes, “don’t judge a book by it's cover”. My brother saw this film before I did and was excited to watch it with me when we saw it together because like other viewers of the film he was pleasantly surprised by it.
I think that if Transformers One had the proper marketing behind it then it certainly would’ve received more love at the box office. Hopefully, going into the next one (if we do get a sequel) they will learn from their lesson and market the film a lot better.
4. Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)
What?! A Tom Cruise Sci-fi/Action film flopped at the box office?! Yeah, that's very odd to even think about considering his passion for film. Even if you don't like Tom Cruise you have to admit his films are always pretty damn entertaining. Edge Of Tomorrow is not only one of my favorite films from both actors careers but it's also one of my favorite films to watch YouTube reactors react to.
It's rare to see Tom Cruise out of his element because his characters are written very strongly. I’m not sure as to why this failed at the box office. My guess would be due to poor marketing, which the tagline confused some fans: “Live, Die, Repeat". Seeing Emily Blunt play this badass rebel soldier who has to teach Tom Cruise character how to harness his power to learn from his mistakes and fight on the battlefield is a sight to see.
3. Turning Red (2022)
This one really isn't surprising since Pixar's Turning Red was released during COVID when people were finally adjusting to getting back into the movie theaters. The film was released on Disney+ which is good to air on the safe side. The downside of that is while the movie was praised for displaying puberty for young woman and the portrayal of Asian culture, the anti-woke audience wasn't having any of it. By the time the film got a worldwide release it didn’t even break even. It made almost $22 million on a budget of $175 million.
2. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010)
I truly believe that if this film was released today it would be more massive than what it was at the time. Scott Pilgrim vs The World only made $51.7 million on a $85 million budget. The film has became a cult classic since it's release and almost every YouTube react channel I see watch this film absolutely loves it. Everything about this film is perfect from the humor, the action, the soundtrack, ensemble cast and Edgar Wright's Direction. From this film and Baby Driver, I go back and fourth on my favorite Edgar Wright film.
1. The Iron Giant (1999)
1999 was a very pivotal year in film and The Iron Giant is one of the best films of that year. With the film only making only $31.3 million on a budget of $50 million, the reasoning for this is because the lack of marketing from Warner Bros and the failure of Warner Bros previous animated film: Quest for Camelot. Despite all of this, The Iron Giant has became a cult classic and was garnered worldwide praise from, the score, animation, voice cast, etc. If anyone has seen the live action Bumblebee starring Hailee Steinfeld then you know that The Iron Giant is a huge inspiration for that film.
