Top 10 Most Disappointing Films of 2024

10. We Live In Time

We Live In Time is an A24 romantic drama starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. The acting in this film is great and it has a lot of emotional weight to it the Screenplay is structured very poorly. The constant jumping back and forth between the present day and past is very distracting. Just when you're invested in the scene you're watching it flashes back to the past or jumps to the present day.

9. A Quiet Place: Day One

Why did we need this? We didn't even need part 2 so why revisit this when no one asked for it? This film adds little to nothing to the previous films. The only reason that Djimon Hounsou is in the film is so fans can go, “hey remember the actor that they wasted in the previous film?”

8. House Of Spoils

I'm still trying to figure this out because this was confusing as hell. Ariana DeBose plays a chef (Her actual name is chef btw. They don’t give her a name) that opens her own restaurant but it appears their is a presence haunting her. The problem is I can't tell what genre this is supposed to be. This film is marketed as a horror but it feels more like a thriller/suspense film rather than a horror.

It steers too far away from the premise and becomes a completely different film. Please, give Ariana DeBose a decent role because that woman deserves better than this.

7. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

What I like about this film: production design, costume design, opening sequence and the action sequences. What do I dislike about this film: the pacing, noticeable CGI and the confusing premise. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga main problem is that they try to tell two different stories at once. The first act of the film is about Furiosa trying to find her way back home, while the 2nd/3d act is a revenge film. When you have two different stories in the same film it becomes confusing to the audience because you're trying to tie all these missing pieces of the puzzle together instead of having it all assembled.

6. Immaculate

Sydney Sweeney auditioned for this role when she was 17 but the project never saw the light of day until Sydney Sweeney became attached. She was attached as a producer, hired a director and the script was re-writen when she acquired the screenplay. So yes I do respect her for getting this film done because we would have never gotten to see it. But how many times have we seen the evil/pregnant nun trope done? This film didn't feel like it added anything new to the trope and if you haven't seen this film it's pretty much the same as all the other horror movies with evil/pregnant nuns.

5. Twisters

Typically, I like to start with the positives first. Pros: cinematography, VFX, soundtrack, opening sequence and Tyler Owens wrangler crew. Cons: Kate is an unlikable main character, Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones lack romantic chemistry. Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton not only have better romantic chemistry than our two leads but Jo is just a more likeable character than Kate.

Also, this idea of “disrupting” a tornado takes away from the impact that the original Twister set up. Other than the Dorothy machine there is absolutely no connection from the original Twister that ties into Twisters. If this film focused more on the impact of the twisters, make Kate a more likable character and cut out the romance between her and Tyler I would've enjoyed it more.

4. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

The same problem I have with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is what I have with this. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth installment in the new series of Planet of the Apes films which started in 2011. Our new protagonist Noa setting out to avenge his clan runs into Raka who tells him the story of Caesar. The revenge story was the most interesting part of this film.

When the premise steers away from “revenge story” to “humans bad, apes are your family" it just retreads old plot points from the previous films. If you ask if there were two bad guys in this film: Proximus Caesar and Nova/Mae. I really wanted Nova/Mae wanted to get mauled by them apes when I found out what her true intentions were. Proximus Caesar and Nova/Mae are the same but at least Proximus Caesar is honest about what his goals are. Cut out the boring human versus apes portion of the story and keep it a revenge film.

3. The Strangers: Chapter 1

I didn’t have any expectations for this at all because I wasn’t that much of a fan of the first film. Trying to add a backstory to The Strangers just ruined their whole mystique. Some villains in horror stories don’t need origin stories. Sometimes it's a lot scarier when we don’t know who they are or why they're doing what they're doing.

Plus, the characters are so goddamn stupid. Really, who the hell smokes pot in the woods when there are serial killers on the loose?

2. Argylle

Great concept: poor execution. Terrible CGI, wasting ensemble cast, constant use of slow motion, the Screenplay and the humor is hit-or-miss. If you want a good popcorn flick then go ahead but this was a huge misfire. A movie this bad doesn't need to be over 2 hours long.

1. Miller's Girl

Another terrible movie about a creepy teacher/student relationship. How many times are they going to do this before they realize we don’t give a damn? It's always a white dude as well, which is absolutely hilarious. Every actor has to take an ‘L’ eventually and this was Jenna Ortega's first ‘L’ so to speak.

This film is absolutely god awful. Why are there very few students on campus and where are all the other professors? Thank God, I didn’t pay to see this hunk of a mess because I’m still pissed thinking about this.
