Mothers Instinct Review

The mother fest of mother fests! This film really has me supporting women’s wrongs in the best way. The story follows 2 friends Celine (Anne Hathaway) and Alice ( Jessica Chastain) 2 Oscar winning actresses with exceptional talent come together to form a somewhat messy film that doesn’t do them justice. Following these 2 friends both with sons, but when Celine’s son passes away from an unfortunate accident. Celine begins to unravel and essentially breaks down mentally and emotionally. But what Alice doesn’t know is that this will start a chain of events that leads to taking what isn’t hers.

Not knowing how to cope with the lose of her son, Celine hangs to Alices son. With demented motives to take him for herself. Sadly Alice realizes the gaslighting and behaviors that scare her and make her realize her true motives. Where this film lacks is it doesn't show me enough of her behaviors behind the scenes to put her plan into action, nor does it show us how the death really causes her to go into a mental break. Just felt like a quick and weird jump from being bestfriends to at odds. I was really wanting Alice to match Celine's behavior and to put an end to these plans. But sadly that doesn’t happy. But what does happens, is a fast unraveling at the end of Celine killing her husband, friend, and their husband to take their son for themselves. To fill the void that was left. What gets me is that none of this was Alice’s fault, it was just an unfortunate accident. I do think, that there were underlying issues with Celine that no one knew, and the could have been shown to add to the story.

Very slow paced for a short run time, but it feels like they rush once near the end. 2 Oscar winning actresses deserved a better script that offered more of a mother off.

Overall 3/5
