Actors Oscar Snubs: Emily Blunt
Early Beginnings
Emily Olivia Laura Blunt is an actor born in London, England on February 23rd, 1983. Emily Blunt starting acting when she was 18 with her first acting performance being the Broadway play of The Broadway Family. She starred alongside Anne Hathaway, (who she has become best friends with) and Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada which garnered her huge praise and even earned her a Golden Globe nomination. Ever since Emily Blunt has become one of the most respected actors in Hollywood.
Her Breakthrough Performance
The Devil Wears Prada garnered huge praise and even received a few nominations at the Academy Awards including Best Performance By An Actress In A Lead Role and Best Costume Design. We are all aware that the Academy is known for category fraud and this was a great instance of it. Anne Hathaway is the main lead of the film and I get that Meryl Streep is huge and that's why she received the nomination, however, Anne Hathaway has way more screentime than her. As far as Emily Blunt she received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance but that doesn't always mean you’ll get into the Academy Awards. You can be doing great all award season and miss out during the Academy Awards and that's what happened to Emily Blunt.
I love Meryl Streep as much as everyone else does, so it's only right that they went with the safest choice. But what I think should have happened is Anne Hathaway gets in (and wins) for Lead Performance while Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt get in for Supporting. I mean it wouldn't be the first or last time that the Academy Awards have nominated two actors on the same film in the same category.
Live. Die. Repeat.
Edge Of Tomorrow is a Sci-fi/Action Adventure film based on the Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill. There is nothing better than seeing a woman in an action film on being on par with the men physically. Yes, Edge Of Tomorrow did fail in the box office but seeing Tom Cruise step aside and let Emily Blunt steal the show is absolutely amazing. Emily Blunt was able to get in for the Critics Choice and even won. Just like horror, comic book and comedy films go ahead and add Action as a genre that the Academy continues to overlook.
I definitely think that this film should have gotten in for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Actress In A Lead Role for Emily Blunt's performance. If there was a perfect opportunity for Emily to receive an Oscar nomination in a Lead Role then this was the time for it.
Keep Your Friends Close And Your Enemies Closer
Scicario is a Crime/Thriller about Kate Mecer an FBI special agent who is enlisted by a government task force to bring down the leader of a powerful and brutal Mexican drug cartel. Scicario was nominated for three subcategories at the Oscar's: Best Cimematography, Best Original Score and Best Sound Editing but missed out on Picture, Director, Original Screenplay and Lead Actor and Actress. This film just gets darker and darker when Kate begins having these conflicting thoughts in her head about who she can trust and what secrets are being held from her.
Once again I'm very conflicted with this because while Scicario is one of the best films of 2015, so is Mad Max: Fury Road. Charlize Theron would be in the same situation as Emily Blunt where the film they were in gets in for some subcategories or even in the main ones but they aren’t nominated for their acting performance. If Charlize Theron didn't give a phenomenal performance in Mad Max: Fury Road then I'd have to give this to Emily. But really how did Emily Blunt not even get into any of the other award shows for her performance? No Golden Globes, SAG or even Critics?
Silence Is Golden
Who would have thought that John Krasinski from The Office would have made an absolute gem with the hit horror movie A Quiet Place? This movie made me fall in love with learning ASL and I still use it to this day so thanks John Krasinski. Like I said earlier, horror films are so disrespected during the Award season and something definitely needs to change. I’ll say what John Krasinski said: this isn't just a horror film it's about a father trying his best to protect his family.
What's so funny is that Emily Blunt was nominated and even won a SAG award for her performance in A Quiet Place. There have been plenty of great performances that are recognized at Golden Globes, SAG, Critics Choice but miss out at the Academy Awards. I’m very glad that Emily Blunt at least received an award for her performance but she also should have received a nomination at the Academy Awards. I would say this would have been a great opportunity for her to take home the Golden Statue, however, an even better horror performance went unrecognized as well and that was Toni Collette for Hereditary.
The Greatest Nanny Ever
Mary Poppins is one of my favorite musicials of all time. Emily Blunt isn't Julie Andrew’s and she doesn't need to be because she brings her own style to the character of Mary Poppins. She's extremely joyful, polite, empathetic and nurturing which I really enjoy about her as Mary Poppins. A musicial performance is more likely to get recognized by the Golden Globes and SAG before the Academy Awards. Typically when musicials get nominated at the Academy Awards it's typically in the other categories: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, you get the picture.
Just like with A Quiet Place, Emily Blunt was recognized by Critics Choice, SAG and Golden Globes for her lead performance in Mary Poppins returns. Unfortunately, she missed out on the Academy Awards despite receiving three nominations at SAG, Critics Choice and the Golden Globes. Since the Academy never nominates an actor in the same category it's more than likely she’d be nominated for Supporting for A Quiet Place while she received Lead Performance for Mary Poppins Returns.
Christopher Nolan Brings American Prometheus To The Big Screen
Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt absolutely carried Oppenheimer on their backs. While, Cillian Murphy and RDJ both were awarded for their performances Emily Blunt lost to Da'Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers. Barbenheimer was an important weekend for movie theater goers and Christopher Nolan finally got the Academy Award he long awaited for. I’m not too upset about Emily Blunt not winning because I feel she should have received her flowers along time ago and I just enjoy Da'Vine Joy Randolph's performance better.
Closing Statement
Emily Blunt is a very talented actor and should have received a Academy Award nomination long before Oppenheimer. She is long overdue for one and should have received her flowers along time ago. I do believe she will receive one eventually. But for what film? I’m not too sure.
Performances She Should’ve Won For: Best Female Actor In A Lead Performance for Edge Of Tomorrow or Scicario
