Across The River and Into The Trees Review
Themes of love, war, aging, and health takes over this film adaptation of one Earnest Hemingways last novels. Staring Liev Schreiber, Josh Hutcherson, and Matilda De Angelis we travel back in time to post World War 2 as Colonial Richard Cantwell takes time off to go to Venice Italy for “duck hunting”. Not only that, he learns of some new health issues that would put an end to his life if he does not change his ways. He decides not to listen, and continue on his trip. But, Jackson (Hutcherson) is tasked with watching over him. Failing miserably he decides to let him do his own thing. One of which is finding guns for the hunting he has planned. But, before any of that can occur he runs into a stunning and kind Renata who has her own issues. But, still she becomes a friend he’s never had. Unexpected but a welcomed friendship. How will this new found relationship effect him, and how will he cope with his eventually death?
What no one knows, is the internal battle Richard is facing. After the loss of his son, and post war he is not sure where he stands or what’s left of his life. For those who haven’t read the book, the ending is predictable yet heartbreaking. I wish we saw more or his past, his battle with PTSD, more involvement from the characters to stop him. I’m not sure if that we present in the book, I would like to think it was. These smaller moments could have been added to make it an impactful and emotional watch. One stand out to me was Matilda’s performance, really impactful and making me wish we had more of her. Still an enjoyable war genre film, filled with great performances.
