Wolf Man Review

Wolf Man is the latest horror film by Blumhouse who brought us films like, Imaginary, M3GAN, Totally Killer, Nightswim and much more. I’m not the biggest fan of Blumhouse films considering a lot of their films are hit-or-miss. They have excellent concepts but their execution is piss poor.

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner as Blake and Charlotte a married couple who are having marital problems. When I first saw the trailer for this film I thought to myself, “Julia looks way too young to play this dudes wife.” But I guess the best part of acting is suspending your disbelief despite how obscene something might be. Anyways, when Blake hears the news about his deceased father he takes Charlotte and their daughter Ginger (played by Matilda Firth) to his old childhood hood to pack up his father's belongings.

Unfortunately, for the Lovell family they get lost on their way there and run into one of Blake's childhood friend, Derek. And you can guess what happens after that. The pacing is great, the acting is decent and Blake's transformation into a wolf was pretty badass but I was never worried that Charlotte and Ginger weren't going to make it out alive. Not only that but I didn't feel like this family was fleshed out enough for us to care about the ending of the film. Out of the whole film there was maybe one time I felt the daughters life was in danger and it wasn’t from Blake either.

Julia Garner was personally the saving grace of this film for me. This movie had the potential but it falls flat by not fleshing out the family and making the audience feel like the family was “safe" the whole time. The thing about horror is making the audience feel uncertain about characters fates. I knew what I was getting myself into but then again I don’t hate this film like some others too. Honestly, horror tropes like these and vampires work better as a period piece.
