The Gorge
2 highly trained operatives from 2 different sides of the world, are the best at what they do. The US Military brings Levi (Miles Teller) and the KGB brings Drasa (Anya Taylor-Joy) in on a secret mission that requires a year of their time to watch a mysterious gorge shrouded in mist, and dangerous beings that arise. Both have nothing to lose, and when they arrive to the gorge, they are both separated in 2 watch towers, they are given little to no information of what exactly is down there, and what they are keeping secret. Little do they know the gorge requires so much secrecy that those tasked with watching it are “let go” from their duties once their year tour is up.
As each begin their tour they settle in for a long wait, and begin to notice each other, and despite the no contact rules, they start a friendship, that slowly transitions into an intense love. A love they are willing to dive into an unknowing mist for, and maybe a love they are willing to die for.
But what is the gorge? Are they protecting something or keeping that something from coming out? That you will have to watch to find out. But, I can tell you, is I had zero idea what I was in for. All Apple had to say was Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy and I was in. A hidden gem of a film, that has all the things: mystery, action, romance, and SiFi. It gave me similar vibes to Call of Duty Black Ops 2, where you fight zombies in an underground forgotten town.
Though there is a good build up, I honestly feel this would have been a better watch as a show, to allow more time for the build up of their relationship, and build up of the story. It left me wanting more, so much more. This film was on my mind for days, and even as I write this now, it just makes me want to watch it over and over. I also think this could have done very well as a multi-film in theaters. Sometimes, you need a good thriller on the big screen, and though this was streaming I still enjoyed it, and had fun. I think you will too! Only thing, that bothered me was some iffy CGI, which is to be expected with streaming films; and maybe more time spent within the gorge itself. But hey, there might be a sequel and there might not be. In my opinion , I do think, there is a good opportunity to make a sequel.
Overall 4/5 one of the most enjoyable streaming films I have seen in a while. Well done Apple.
