Nosferatu Review

Nosferatu is a remake of the original Horror short film of the same name directed by Robert Eggers who brought us The Witch, The Lighthouse & The Northman. Let me just start by saying you don’t have to watch the original classic to understand this. I knew I would like this film going in but I wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did. Horror is slowly becoming one of my favorite genres and after watching this I'm happy to say that Nosferatu lived up to the hype.

Nicholas Hoult and Lily Rose Deep play husband and wife, Ellen and Thomas. Since she was a kid Ellen has had these vivid nightmares about the Count (played by Bill Skarsgard), but the nightmares start to return after she and Thomas become newlyweds. Thomas is sent to meet with the count about selling him a house and you can guess where it goes from there. I find it difficult for the build of a monster to be satisfying in a lot of horror films because they just end up looking goofy but Bill Skarsgard is terrifying to watch. Honestly, I totally forgot he was in this film until the credits because the hair/makeup really transformed him to this gruesome looking vampire.

Can we talk about the ensemble cast for a minute? You have Aaron Taylor Johnson, Emma Corrin and the all spectacular William Dafoe. Everyone in this film is absolutely excellent at displaying terror and camera shots and the score certainly help with that too. The way this movie is shot makes the camera work feel like a character. Some scenes are meant to misguide you while others lead you into the jumpscare and it still works great because the acting is phenomenal.

Some people might have had a problem with the runtime but I didn’t simple for the fact that I was so invested in the story, the acting and the magnificent cinematography. Robert Eggers you have done it again good sir!
