Strange Darling Review

Trigger and spoiler warning!

Strange Darling is an thriller/horror film about a one night stand gone wrong. What I love about films such as these is that it immediately throws you into the action with little to no context and we are left to put the pieces of the puzzle together when we are given more information about these characters and their environment. Countless other great films have done this such as: Inglorious Bastards, Goodfellas, A Quiet Place, Mission Impossible 3 and countless other examples.

Willa Fitzgerald plays, “The Lady”, while Kyle Gallner plays, “The Demon”. This film is told in six chapters and an epilogue. The audience is immediately thrown into the action as The Lady is running from her life from The Demon in the woods after he crashes her car off of the road. With more context and clues we find out that The Lady and The Demon had a sexual relationship together where they engaged in BDSM.

Based on the vibes that I got from The Demon whenever The Lady told him, “no" during certain acts of intimacy I assumed he was going to force himself on her or was trying to kill her because she said, “no”. However, it was the opposite. They established certain rules and one of them is whenever she says, “no" she means “yes". Which initially The Demon wasn't really into that at first but The Lady convinces him otherwise.

The plot twist in this film is mind blowing! It definitely throws you for a loop and you don't even seen it coming. It turns out that The Lady actually isn't so “innocent” and that there is something dark lurking inside her. She is a complete and utter psychopath who enjoys pain being inflicted on her as well as others. So when you connect all the pieces of the puzzle together The Demon doesn't look so insane compare to her.

This was an excellent film with great performances and great twist! It definitely keeps you on your toes. There is a feeling of uncertainty when it comes not only The Lady and The Demon but also anyone who comes in contact with The Lady. What a great film that discusses drug addiction, sexually consent and the dangers of one night stands.
