Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Review

Let me start by saying I'm not a huge fan of Tim Burton. Especially considering black people aren't his “aesthetic”. I wasn't really a huge fan of the first film, but I decided to go see this because Jenna Ortega is one of my favorite actors and Winona Ryder is just so likable. Their press run together has been amazing. They are like the same side of a coin.

Aside from the racial stereotypes in this film (a black soul train line and an Asian man owning a dry cleaning store in the after life) it's a pretty good family film. It definitely surpasses the original film. When asked about the wait on the film Winona Ryder's response, “we were waiting on Jenna to be born" was the kindest and truest statement ever. Winona and Jenna make a great mother/daughter duo and not only do they have great chemistry on screen but their press runs together have been great.

Catherine O'Hara is an absolutely delight in this film. She's so charming and funny that even when she wasn't on screen I missed her presence. I'm glad that they finally acknowledge the age difference between Lydia and Beetleguice. Ups: ensemble cast is spectacular, hair and makeup design, practical effects, costume design, production design, the humor, Catherine O'Hara steals the show and Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega make a great mother/daughter duo. Downs: the racial stereotypes and the CGI.

I definitely think this is an improvement over the previous film. Michael Keaton is still one hell of a character. While, he's still playing the same character, this performance as opposed to the original Beetlejuice, is completely different. To me the character felt less outrageous and sexual, which is great considering the era we live in. Overall, pretty good film and definitely is better than the original.
